Ceratium . Phylum Chlorophyta (7,000 sp., fr. Greek chloros = yellow-green) - Volvox, Spirogyra, Chlamydomonas . Several multicellular organisms have arisen from this very diverse group of algae, including the unknown ancestor of all green plants.

The genus contained a large number of marine dinoflagellate species. However, these marine species have now been assigned to a new genus called Tripos.Ceratium dinoflagellates are characterized by their armored plates, two flagella, horns, they are of concern due to their blooms.

Its unique shape is easily recognizable. Like other protists, ceratium transforms the sun’s energy into food through photosynthesis, using chloroplasts to make sugars. Chloroplasts are microscopic, solar-powered factories containing chlorophyll, a green pigment that captures sunlight. Ceratium is a ubiquitous thecate dinoflagellate genus, slow growing, characteristically found during all seasons and contributing substantially to annual primary production in the world's oceans (Dodge and Marshall, 1994).

Dinoflagellates of the genus Ceratium are generally marine organisms, but rare occurrences in freshwater have been Phylum Pyrrophyta (Dinoflagellates).

The ones which are photosynthetic are sometimes loosely called 'algae'; the one which are predators are sometimes loosely called 'protozoa'. They have been classified as an order, a class and a phylum by different authors. Active research is being done on their relationships.
